Potential Controlled Burns in Canberra

To prepare for the fire season the ACT Parks and Conservation Service may conduct a number of prescribed burns in the coming months in areas used by equestrians. TAMS require a precise window of conditions to carry out the activities so not all burns may be carried out.

FB002 North of Shakespeare Crescent, Fraser, on the BNT route

FB042-FB045 along the back of the suburb of Chapman on Cooleman Ridge

FB049 Mt Arawang above the horse paddocks on Namatjira Drive

FB161 Part of the Mount Ainslie Nature Reserve near Hackett

FB167 The eastern slopes of Mt Majura Nature Reserve

FB193 Wanniassa Nature Reserve along the southern side of Erindale Drive

FB408 In the Mt Taylor Nature Reserve on the northern side of Sulwood Drive

These are part of the Bushfire Operations Plan and can be found on the BOP maps at http://www.tams.act.gov.au/parks-conservation/bushfire_management/fuel_management/bushfire-operations-plan.

Hot and dry conditions limit prescribed burns during summer. However based on a potential shift to cooler and wetter conditions within the next fortnight prescribed burns have been scheduled for Cooleman & Sulwood when suitable weather, fuel and soil moisture conditions are present. (Scroll down at http://www.tams.act.gov.au/parks-conservation/bushfire_management/prescribed-burnsfor links directly to maps of the proposed burn areas.)

You can follow ACT Parks on Twitter @ACT_Parks for real-time updates before and during a burn. There is information there now, for instance, about the Sulwood Drive burn.

Make sure your pony’s fire plan is in place!
